Heliotrope
is a living
philosophy

We believe desire is one of modernity’s most marginalized and misunderstood emotions, and that tapping into desire has the potential to transform both individuals and society. We are guided by one simple question that we also use to guide others:

What if we all stopped doing what we’re told, and started doing what we want?

Our thought leadership and research aims to expand public consciousness of desire beyond the consumerist or erotic to encompass every element of life, and to explore and reverse its unequal suppression. Our programs and partnerships put this intellectual framework into practice, teaching individuals and institutions how to uncover and live by what is most true for them, stripped of socialization and noise.

At Heart,
We Are A
Social Movement.

We are animated by a quest to re-shape the world on individual and collective terms. On an individual level, we look at historic rates of contemporary unhappiness and believe the wrong questions are being asked to address it. We disagree that over-knowledge of trauma, problems, or victimization is an effective tool to create a meaningful life, while fully acknowledging the structural barriers to flourishing that affect us inequally. Indeed, these inequalities are what motivates us on a social level. Those born to power have always been taught that what they want matters, and we aim to expand this sense of agency to all, because we believe that the right to an existentially meaningful life is a human right.

Our research and programming alike draws from the social sciences, sciences, philosophy, religion, and anthropology. The body and its physiology are particular areas of expertise, along with the sociology of desire and its repression. We are currently in active development of our offerings – which will include partnerships with institutions and individuals in the form of live and digital programming – and our scholarship, which will take the form of research, essays, histories, events, and special projects.

Stay tuned for forthcoming thought leadership and opportunities to engage with our work and mission. We can be found @helitroperising on Instagram, and would be pleased to share periodic updates with you via email, which can be accessed via the sign-up link below.
